Dan J. Nichols



Dan is a seasoned trial attorney with extensive experience handling eDiscovery in matters ranging from single plaintiff cases to mass tort and class actions in state and federal courts across the United States. Dan’s extensive experience guiding matters from inception at the pleading stage, through all phases of discovery, motions practice, settlement negotiations and trial, provides him with a unique and practical understanding of how eDiscovery strategy impacts case outcomes and budgets. His experience representing large companies involved in complex litigation provides Dan with keen insights into large scale litigation and governmental investigation challenges. Some of Dan’s recent work experience includes:

  • Leading the Firm’s work for a Fortune 100 company addressing discovery strategy and disputes in state and federal courts across the United States as well as in connection with various state and federal government inquiries and investigations, addressing issues such as preservation, search, format of production, privilege, and protective orders regarding confidentiality
  • Leading the Firm’s work successfully preparing key 30(b)(6) witnesses for a Global 100 company in multi-district litigation addressing contentious discovery issues including spoliation and document destruction allegations 
  • Leading the Firm’s work for a Fortune 100 client addressing the complex intersection of rules, laws, and best practices guiding the timely destruction of information with the rules and laws requiring retention and preservation, ultimately developing a strategy to enable a client to better manage large volumes of data across the enterprise
  • Leading the Firm’s work as National Discovery Counsel for a Fortune 200 client in state and federal courts across the United States, as well as assisting the client with privacy and information governance issues
  • Serving as a key team member in In re McDermott International, Inc. (Bankr. S.D.Tex.), where Redgrave LLP acted as Discovery counsel for debtor, energy industry provider of engineering, construction, and installation services, restructuring $9.2 billion in prepetition debt

Prior to joining Redgrave LLP, Dan was a Partner at Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani LLP and an associate at Filice Brown Eassa & McLeod, focusing his practice on complex litigation in environmental, product liability, and construction matters. 


Dan is a member of the Defense Research Institute, the California Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the J. Reuben Clark Law Society. Dan is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, where he teaches eDiscovery.


Dan received his J.D., magna cum laude, from J. Reuben Clark Law School, Brigham Young University and a B. A. in Political Science from Southern Oregon University. Dan is admitted to practice in California, Oregon, and Washington.
